Hi Di!
Great idea here! I want to know if it is offensive to refer to people as "Hispanic" or "Latino" if they are Mexican, Puerto Rican or from another Spanish speaking group?

Hi there...
Thanks for your feedback on Ask Di Versity advice column. Your question is an excellent one and reflects your desire to be respectful of others. The terms "Hispanic" and "Latino" are not everyone's preference because none of us enjoy being lumped into a catch-all group or label. People who are often described using these terms represent a language group as opposed to a race or ethnic group. They can be from all racial groups and several different ethnic groups such as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cubano, Dominican, Peruvian, Venezuelan, etc. To be most respectful, it's best to ask folks how they wish to be identified. But don't get bent out of shape if two people from a single group do not wish to be identified in the same manner. It's all about respecting who they are as opposed to what you want to call them.
Remember relationships are the only human-generated source on energy on the planet...so we all need to value them and learn to manage them well.
Inclusively yours,
Di Versity
